Note: This was written right after I read Knux #29 and was sent to Archie, but not printed as usual. :)
If there is one thing that has always been present since I started reading with SONIC #37, it's Sal and Knux' friendship. It was very logical for them to be great friends. They are approximately the same age and have been experiencing very similar situations. Both, at a very young age, have been forced to become "adults." They have to sacrifice what they would like to do in order to do what is best for their respective people. That is something most people their age do not have to do. They both have to take part in fighting battles and wars that decide the fate of not only themselves and their best friends, but the entire planet on a regular basis. It's a wonderful thing for them to be friends because, even though they each have their own assortment of friends, I don't think any of their friends truly understand what Knux or Sal go through. Even though their friends help out, in the end, it's the Guardian or the Princess who really have to make the decision. And that has to be tougher than anything in the world, because if they plan wrong or make one mistake, Mobius could be done for.
After KNUCKLES #29, Sal and Knux' friendship is a little on the rocks and I hope it's solidified again. Both of them realize something that the Brotherhood has failed to notice. Whatever happens on the Floating Island will greatly affect Mobius Prime and vice versa. I don't think Knux will ever be able to convince them until it's too late, so I hope he and Sal can patch up their friendship and that Knux, or his friends can lend a helping hand in the battle against the new Robotnik. If there's something that Sal has to remember is that Knux is the Guardian of the Floating Island, so he can't be a full-fledged Freedom Fighter, that's why Sonic's is a FF. The Floating Island has more than it's fair share of problems (The DL, Renfield, Ebony, etc.). Just like Knux can't, or doesn't expect, the FFs to help him out every time there's a problem (and I don't think it's his ego anymore).
This issue though, was very well written (as always) by Ken Penders. The art was good, but I had a problem with the way the Guardians of the Brotherhood were drawn. They had too many happy, smiling faces, especially Spectre who is supposed to be the "dark one." But the last page was spectacular! I was surprised, but I actually shed some tears at the end of this issue because it was very sad. Mrs. Sommersby said it best, "They're just kids! They should be laughing and having fun--not fighting wars and carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders!" But, the lives of Knux and Sal will always have them "carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders" and to me that's what is really sad. They will never get to really enjoy being young. They have moments, like Knux and Sonic's respective 16th birthday parties, but most of the time, it's business as usual. Stop the latest mad dictator from taking over the Floating Island and then Mobius, or vice versa. However, I know the main reason I read these books is because the main characters for the most part are just teenagers, and they save the world day in and day out. I just wanted to tell you my feelings about this issue and what it made me think about.
